At one time this was a great product. This product is now so poorly made. The filler is made from newspaper that I can read full words from the shredding. My home shredder does a better job. The newspaper also does not allow the water to soak through. After multiple days of watering, I found that water did not get all the way through the paper. The product also use to be green colored. Now it is uncolored, the patchmaster makes the yard look worse then with the dead spots. Horrible product, makes me consider everyone one of their products to be a poor quality like this one.

Two separate attempts with zero success. Very disappointing. I carefully followed directions, especifically watering. Only some of the seed types germinate but nothing survives. A total waste of time and money. I think it needs more perennial rye to get some quicker germination. This product is a failure and certainly does nothing to promote the Scotts brand image.

I had quite a few bare spots to fix in my lawn this past spring, and as I always use Scotts fertilizers and like the results, I tried Patch Master. I also had some of another product left--the Pennington patch with the same type of ingredients--the seed, and fertilizer and mulch. This was the perfect test to see what worked better. I used the Scotts in one area of the yard and the Penningtons in another--both the same sun exposure.
I followed the instructions completely and there was no doubt about it--the Penningtons came up faster and stronger. The big disappointment was that the Scotts barely even came up at all.
Just this week I did some fall patch care on the lawn and used Penningtons. The Scotts was just not good at all.

We're sorry that you received such poor seeding results with PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix. Generally, PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix is spread in a layer no thicker than 1/2 inch and if applied too heavily, seed may not germination.

We are sorry for the disappointment you have experienced with the results of your recent seeding effort. I'd like to offer a few tips that may be helpful to you in future seeding endeavors. As with any seed product, Scotts PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix requires both continuous moisture and warm soil temperatures. When one of these conditions is missing, poor germination is the result. If PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix is applied in early spring, when temperatures and moisture are inconsistent, seed development will be sparse.

Be sure to spread the PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix evenly over the prepared area. If this product is allowed to remain in clumps, the seed will not germinate. Check the package for proper coverage; this will give you an idea as to how thick the PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix should be placed. Generally, PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix is spread in a layer no thicker than 1/2 inch. Lastly, make sure that no weed control or weed prevention product has been used in the area, as those products will also prevent or inhibit germination. When used on newly germinated lawns, herbicides will kill off the new grass. I hope these extra tips will be helpful.

When I saw the product on the shelf, I thought, what a great idea for taking care of Mother Earth while creating a nice lawn. I followed the directions to a T, including preparing the area (lots of small spots needing seeding) with some premium dirt. I'm disappointed to say that only a few of the seeds germinated in any of the spots. I tried applying the product in varying depths to see what the impact might be. I'm certainly not a lawn care expert, but the shredded paper appeared to more smother the seeds rather than moistening them. A switch to the EZ seed, product, and poof, instant lawn. Needless to say, I'm disappointed in a product that comes from an company that I've learned to trust to supply premium lawn care products.
ConsDidn't work as expected, great marketing idea that i hope can be improved

I bought this product to help cover some bare spots in the yard. It certainly did that, the news print "mulch" still has not dissolved completely, which is good since the seed never sprouted.
My biggest mistake was tossing the receipt and packaging since I usually am quite happy with the Scott's products that I've purchased in the past.

I recently purchased PatchMaster to re-seed an area where we removed a tree. This is the 3rd time that I have used this product and I have always had great results. The previous instances were for similar reasons. I had removed a shrub on one occasion and had a mound of gravel in my yard for another project on the other. I just followed the directions on the package and within 4-5 days, the grass starts coming up as advertised. It's been a few years since the other times that I have used the product, but you can still tell that the grass in those PatchMaster areas is some of the thickest, lushest grass in my whole yard.

"Several months ago" I used the PatchMaster product. Not one blade of grass ever came up! It was as if I didn't use anything. I completely followed all of the step by step directions and faithfully watered everyday. I called Scotts and they apologized and suggested EZ seed. It's been about another month since I've seeded and watered and still nothing!! The summer is almost over and I still have bald spots in those same areas. I feel the PatchMaster somehow suffocated those areas and now nothing will grow there. My lawn looks terrible.
Very frustrated and disappointed

A lot of variables come into play when planting grass seed. Several things need to go right. Make sure the soil is loose & pulverized, add a ton of rich topsoil, and water the fertilizer like crazy every day. Also, make sure this is the right grass seed for your region & plant it at the right time of year. I think it's a bluegrass mix, so cool spring or cool fall would be ideal. The bottom line is to do your homework & make sure you use the right product for your lawn, because every lawn is not equal.

I purchased the product at Home Depot and followed the instructions carefully. It appeared during application of the product that there was no grass seed in the bag. I applied the product and followed instructions. After three weeks, there was not one blade of grass to be seen which seems to support that there was no seed in the mix. I am out $30 and had to re do the sections planted with a product from another company.

I used this product last year with great results. I read and followed the directions, but also patted the product to the greound. I looked at some of the pictures and it looks like maybe the "fluff" is still there. I figured that the seed needed to be in contact with the soil for the root to be able to take hold. I would agree that the directions may need to be rewritten to ensure consistent positive results, but the product is basically the same stuff that the hydroseeders spray out of their equipment, just in a dry form.

Had just move into our new house and had a big Norwood Maple that shaded my whole yard. The grass was thin and patchy. We had the tree trimmed up and back which gave us full sun on our lawn so we decided to heavy seed .that didn't work . Birds eating the seed and the sun burning the seed plus I didn't water as needed. My neighbor a landscaper told me to feed my lawn then wait till fall to seed . So I went out and bought scotts weed and feed and my lawn green up and was weed free with in 3 weeks than we bought scotts patch master and put this product down and followed the directions and in about 10 days I had a beautiful lawn better and greener then my neighbors. We used this product late spri g and watered 2x a day in morning and early afternoon.

I purchased two large packages of Patch Master prior to reading any reviews. I was pretty pessimistic after reading reviews, but since I already had the product, I figured I'd try it.
Before saying anything else, let me make it clear - I have no clue about growing anything, including grass. I'm about as novice as it gets.
In my front yard, I had about 6 or so burn spots, a few square feet each. I dethatched the areas, used a hard rake to break up a little of the top soil. I have pretty sandy soil in my area, so I also put down some top soil I bought at Home Depot (forget the brand/name). I didn't put down a ton of new dirt, just enough to cover the existing soil I broke up.
I covered each area in patch master, thoroughly soaked each area, and then twice daily, I turned on a sprinkler to water the areas. In the morning, I would normally water for about 30-45 minutes (starting at 7am). In the evenings, I would normally water for about 2 hours (starting at 8pm).
On the 6th day, each spot had some blades shooting up. Today (day 12), there is pretty darn good coverage.
During the near 2 weeks, we've had a couple heavy rains, and a couple very sunny days. Most of the spots I treated have direct sunlight, although a few are decently shaded, but still came in well at this point.
Since things have gone so well in the front yard, I've since applied Patch Master to a couple hundred square foot dirt patch in my back yard. This area is heavily shaded, so we'll see how it turns out. The backyard patch is only on day 3, so no results yet (as expected).
The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the cost. It's pretty spendy.

I bought and applied two bags before reading the reviews on this site and after reading them I was concerned that I wasted my money. After a week of watering the seed once or twice a day I could see grass sprouting. After three weeks I mowed and it looks really good. There are a few spots where the grass is thinner but this should fill in over time. It was really easy to work with and I am happy with my results. I had previously put down grass seed only to have it be completely picked bare by birds, having the mulch in the PatchMaster made it undesirable to them.
ProsValue, Quality, Easy to Use, Good Directions, Effective, stops hungry birds
ConsMessy

I just recently used Scotts PatchMaster Sun and Shade Mix and I had pretty good results. I have a black lab and keeping the grass nice is almost impossible.
I followed the instructions by scratching the soil, laying down about 1/4 inch of material and watering twice a day. It's now been 9 days and I see seedlings in most of the spots.
So far it's working well. I included a picture.
ProsValue, Quality, Easy to Use, Good Directions, Effective, easy and works

I am currently using your Scott's patcmaster in toms river nj seems to be working great as when I peel back the product there seems to be new grass beautifully growing underneath! But my question is do I remove the insulation or will the grass grow right thru it or does it just disintegrate on its own? So I'm unsure as what my next step is do I just leave it there or do I rake it up as there is no aftercare or what to do next! And also wanted to share I couldn't get grass to grow here no matter what I tried so I hope this is a success for me like I said under the product there is fresh new grass just not sure if this stuff goes away or do I have to rake it up will grass grow thru it or do I have to remove it
ProsQuality, Easy to Use, Effective
Consneeds better aftercare instructions
Yes, I recommend this product.

I'm certain that it will disolve on its own. You do not want to take the chance on destroying the progress you have made. You cannot see the material in the area where I used it; the grass has grown through it.
